The Biggest Mistakes People Make When Trying to Rescue a Dog

When people see a dog in trouble, many feel the instinct to help—though some look the other way or assume someone else will step in. Whether it’s a stray dog on the street or a dog posted online that needs rescue, most people genuinely want to do the right thing.
However, dog rescue is often more complicated than it first appears. Over the 25+ years working with rescue dogs and behavior cases, I’ve seen many situations where well-meaning people unintentionally made things more difficult for the dog or slowed the rescue process.
Understanding a few of the most common mistakes people make when trying to help can make a big difference in how safely and successfully a dog is rescued.
Chasing a Frightened Dog
One of the most common mistakes people make is chasing a scared dog.
When a dog is frightened, chasing almost always causes the dog to run further away. In many cases this makes recovery much more difficult and can push the dog into unfamiliar or dangerous areas.
Assuming the Dog Was Abandoned
Another common assumption is that a dog found outside must have been abandoned.
In reality, many dogs that appear stray are actually lost pets that slipped out of their collar, escaped a yard, or became separated from their owner.
Trying to Handle Everything Alone
Dog rescue often involves coordination between shelters, veterinarians, volunteers, and foster homes. Trying to manage everything alone can sometimes slow the process or create additional challenges.
Why Rescue Work Is Often More Complex Than People Realize
Helping dogs in need is incredibly rewarding, but successful rescue efforts usually involve planning, communication, and understanding how the system works.
Many people want to help but aren’t always sure where to start or how the rescue process actually works.
